Meeting With Real, Live Laboratory Informatics People

Statistics are not only misleading but they’re a cold stand-in for a human being.
And so, it was good for me to have the opportunity to meet with so many industry people in the last couple weeks at the conferences I attended. Additionally, I’m always a bit amazed when people tell me they’ve read my blog (without me prompting them, either!). Right now, I’m working on my customer site and enjoying our scheduled visit. And, as with the conferences, it was fun for me to have a team member come up and tell me about how they were reading my blog posts to follow me at the conferences.
Sure, I can read the statistics and see that, yes, people are actually reading this blog. Those of you who are regular readers already know that I take the statistics with a grain of salt, to begin with. But even when you take them the slightest bit seriously, it’s still not the same as having an actual human being saying this directly to your face.
And that’s the same with many other things, too. It’s easier to see people’s facial expressions in-person than on a video phone, making requirements gathering easier in-person. It feels good to have a night out with the team and there’s no good virtual replacement for that, yet.
You can’t shake a person’s hand across the internet, look them in the eye, and wish them well for the day. It’s just not the same. Every once in awhile, we all need a little of "face" time.
