How to Get a Good Night's Sleep

The key to a good night's sleep is to avoid thinking about your project issues when you get into bed.

Any problems with the project, itself, can lead to agitation and an inability to get to sleep. This is not the time to ponder whether you're "doing enough" for a particular customer. This is not the time to mentally beat yourself up for anything you did not finish for a particular project for the day. This is a particularly bad time to wonder why your code keep crashing on you when you try to update a record. It is a terrible time to think about why your configuration isn't updating the screen with the correct information.

Yet, it is sometimes hard not to let the problems of the day drop onto us once we go to bed. This is exactly the mistake I made, last night. Eventually, I let the day's issues keep me up for most of the night and, for what little sleep I did get, I ended up having scope creep nightmares.

The reason I bring this up isn't that I'm looking for any pity. I most certainly did this to myself. However, here in the US when the Labor Day weekend is behind us, we consider this the start of the Fall season. As such, many of us will have a lot more work to do, more things to worry about, and we will need our sleep more than ever.

To those who never have this problem because they are so relaxed and well-adjusted that they never, ever let this happen to them, even on occasion, I say we should all take a leaf from your book and learn from you. For the rest of us, just remember that whatever is bothering you won't be an issue, forever. Soon, you'll have a totally new set of problems to keep you awake.  :-)

One method to help is to think about what sleep does. I read this a few years ago and to any computer person it makes sense. Sleep is the time when the brain moves data from the short term memory area to long term. It is also the time when it restores the immune system. When I read it, I thought "backup and restore". Also, it lets the subconscious take over the long term thinking problem. That is why we wake up with the solution.

As soon as I read what you wrote, it made sense to me. However, upon thinking more about it, I really think I "get" it. And, it does explain that odd phenomenon many of us have to come up with solutions through sleep.

I didn't realize that Accelrys made a LIMS. I guess I thought of you as an ELN company, for whatever those terms mean, anymore. Ironically, when I went to look up what your LIMS was, found that you have an entire whitepaper on how to avoid LIMS nightmares. Too bad I didn't find that and read it!

Tip #1 on your list should be: "Use all your services from GeoMetrick Enterprises.! ;-)
