Networking and Business Cards

I actually go to more networking events outside our industry than within our industry. I've noticed a change in business cards.

There just aren't any LIMS groups around here and I'm not planning to start any (not today, for sure!). As such, I'm lucky to find people who will let me hang out with them, more or less. I do pick groups someone related to potential applications in our industry, although they might not necessarily be things that I am personally, currently working with.

What I've noticed is that business cards are increasingly no longer the standard size. The issue this creates is that they won't fit in the standard business card holders many of us had been carrying around.

Since I don't attend our industry events, I'd be curious to hear if any of the companies at our industry events start doing this. Since many are bigger companies, I'd be surprised to hear that they do. So, if you're at one of our industry events and see an unusual business card, drop me a line - I'd be curious to hear about it. If you go to PLA (Paperless Lab Academy) and see this, I want to know! (okay, that was a lame excuse to put in a link to promote PLA, but it seemed like a good place for it)

For me, I don't have a problem with the non-standard card size because I have a little notepad I got from joining the Thermo Fisher Scientific Informatics partner program that I has a little pocket I can shove anything that's not too large into. This might be my own unusual way of making the partner program work for me but, hey, you do what you can, right?!   ;-)

This actually came up at a tradeshow some years ago (with time left over after a presentation on automatic testing methods, the presenter asked this specific question - by the way I thought this was a great way to build rapport with the audience). The consensus (>80-90% of audience) was that oversize business cards, and advertising bigger than 8.5x11, get culled as soon as they get back to the office. Some people (myself included) will try to cut REALLY INTERESTING material down to size (of course I work in one of those old fashioned offices that has a paper cutter at hand) but if that doesn't work out it goes. Aggravation and inconvenience outweighs creativity
